Rota, Spain

We pulled into Rota in the morning on Wednesday.  It was mostly just so that we could get some more mail and supplies.  The crew just about emptied the Navy Exchange (NEX) there though stocking up on snacks, entertainment, and needed uniform items.  I’ve heard that the city of Rota is nice, and there was some kind of festival going on while we were there this time.  Unfortunately, we weren’t able to see it, because of the short bit of time that we had.  I had duty on the day that we pulled in, so I didn’t make a trip to the NEX.  They tried to rotate everyone in the duty section off the ship so that they could get whatever they needed, but I don’t need anything that badly.

The next morning reveille was actually half an hour early, and we got underway just as the sun was coming up.  It was a really nice sunrise.  There were just enough clouds in the sky that the sun created some beautiful colors.  The weather is a bit chillier here than it was in the southern regions.  I may have to get out my warm weather clothes again.

You'll have to post some more pics. The hubster and I have been enjoying looking through your pics and traveling the world through your eyes. We especially love the pics of the ship.

Is the NEX onboard? Are you able to get things you need? My son in law in Iraq goes to the PX and you can only get certain things as the popular things sell out as soon as they hit the shelves. I send him a 4-pack of Red Bull every 3 weeks because that is in such high demand at the PX that he is rarely able to get it there. What is it with Red Bull and the military?

Keep up the good work and stay safe!

Hehe. My husband and I were stationed in Rota from May 03 to Feb 06 and every time a ship pulled in we'd rush to the NEX or commissary to grab what we needed before the shelves were emptied. I miss those days.

It was a great duty station. When you're up for shore duty, you should think about the Media Center there. It's a JO's world so it might be difficult to make rank, but not impossible. My husband (an IC) made first while we were there. The atmosphere is very laid back and relaxed. Short hours and cell phone duty every six weeks or so. A very nice life... lots of time for extra-curricular activities.

If you get the chance and you like steak, you need to try Los Argentinos. The best argentine steak ever. They don't open until 7 or 8 but it's worth the wait. Try the chorizo too.

(found your blog via flicr, btw.)
